Dung beetles (scarab beetles) are beetles that feed on dung and play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance. One of the most interesting abilities of dung beetles is that they use the sky to navigate while carrying the dung into balls to their burrows. Some dung beetles, especially those active at night, find their way by referencing the Moon, the Milky Way, and specific stars. This remarkable skill allows them to move in the right direction even in the dark.
Research shows that thanks to this navigational ability, dung beetles can quickly and safely transport dung balls to their burrows. With these characteristics, dung beetles are considered essential to preserving ecological balance. In addition, by rapidly removing dung, they help prevent the spread of diseases. Thus, they function as natural fertilizers and efficient cleaners. Dung beetles are also among the strongest animals in the world. They are powerful enough to push 1,100 times their own weight—an amount equivalent to a human carrying an average minivan. Thanks to this extraordinary strength, they can roll dung balls over long distances.
